I would like to find out how people feel about this. For future reference, this applies to Israeli and Palestinian activity as of 7/6/2006.

I think you mean "ceased" instead of "siezed" ;-)

I'm interested in the outcome of this...

I'm curious as to how one presents polls such as these. I see them from time to time. Might want to propose one of my own some day.

What do you know? Poll results seem consistent with mainstream opinion. Shocker, eh?

Not really. By the reaction of some people, I thought questions 1 and 3 might be more anti-Israel. I am glad that they are not... so far anyway. I think we should engage in some discussions on specific points to attempt to establish what the reality is and then repeat the poll.

Why are you surprised at this? The mainstream media reflects the very same levels of opinion.

Whenever there's a story about Israel on Newsvine it's always the same old Israel bashing in the comments section.

There are a few people who regularly bash Israel in many of the stories mentioning such things. This is hardly indicative of the mainstream opinion though.

I was sort of surprised just because you never know with many people not happy with isreal/anti-isreal so I was surprised when every question I answered was also the lead opinion. Interesting.

Polls are an imperfect way for determining opinion because they just reduce the options to yes/no - black and white and we know that these sort of issues never really boil down to being so clear-cut.

In this particular case, I think it's safe to say that the choices are so polarized that I doubt you will find people who will be in the middle. It's like saying: "Michael Jackson is a man." (true/false) - while philosophy may be brought in to define "man", what it means to "be", do sexes really exist, if he can be changed to a woman, is he really a man... but all this is irrelevant. Semantically, this question makes sense.

There's no option for "maybe" or "don't know". The answers to your questions are not as cut and dried as you think. For instance:

If Palestinian/Israeli violence stopped, Israel would support economic development in Palestine.

I would hope that Israel would do this but I don't know enough about the situation to be sure. Not everyone is an expert on this conflict.

I will say, though, that I've learned a hell of a lot from the various postings on Newsvine, including this one. Some of the discussion has got too personal but I suppose that's understandable considering the emotional attachment that many here have with the conflict.

The greatest danger I think lies in people who don't know enough about a subject and yet decide to have a strong conviction. It's much better to acknowledge that one is not knowledgeable... so you have a point - there should have been a third option there "I don't know enough about the subject to have a position"

                  Strange:

As of the time of posting of this message:
75% feel that if Palestinians stop aggression, Israel will stop.
8% feel that if Israeli side stopped, so would Palestinians

Yet I see far less people calling for Palestinians to stop than for Israelis...

Less in terms of number of people? Or less in terms of the same five people writing multiple comments condemning Israel?

This is a very good thing about polls - they can give you a much broder view of what your readers think than just looking at the comments (where many people don't have the time or feel too intimidated to participate).

I don't know how useful this is - I responded honestly so for example I said that I think if Israel stops its violence (which I assume to mean missiles and bombs and tanks and guns) that Palestinian violence will NOT stop.
But I consider the question pretty meaningless.
No Palestinian militant is asking Israel to stop military operations that target Palestinians as a requirement for a ceasefire. The issue is clear - a ceasefire has been offered on numerous occasions if Israel stops the occupation.

borg, Israel has made numerous concessions and the violence was never restarted by them.

The question is not meaningless because if popular opinion becomes that the blame lies with the Palestinian violence and if this reflects reality, then public opinion might shift reducing those militants in support and increasing support of Israel. Consequence? Violence from Palestinian militants will end sooner (whether by choice or by force from Israel) and the conflict will be resolved to benefit both the Israeli and the Palestinian people.
